Stellenbosch, South Africa; November 2019: The Longridge Ou Steen Enkel Wingerd Chenin Blanc 2017 were awarded a 5-star accolade from Platter’s South African Wine Guide on Friday 8 November.
The style of the wine is inspired by the unique terroir of the vineyard, a registered Heritage Vineyard under the Old Vine Project. It is often compared by critics to Vouvray from the Loire valley in France and resonates unbelievable balance and poise as an age-worthy South African Chenin Blanc. This highly awarded single vineyard wine from Longridge Wine Estate, leading estate in biodynamic and organic winemaking, were also awarded 93 points from Tim Atkin earlier this year.
The Ou Steen is harvested from a from 38-year-old certified single vineyard that is 0.6 hectares in size and yields about 26 HL/ha. While many other old vineyards are uprooted due to sustainability and maintenance costs, Longridge continues to invest in the heritage of their vineyards. Along with meticulous vineyard care, Italian consultant Livio Tognon assists in the management of the vines hoping to increase yields and ultimately ensuring long-term success for the Ou Steen vineyard.
Biodynamic practices are further followed on the estate, ensuring no herbicides or chemical sprays are used in the growing and production of these grapes. The fruit was hand-picked in small picking bins to ensure that perfect grapes reached the cellar before whole-bunch pressing and wild fermentation ensued.
“We were hesitant to enter the wine so young as it is traditionally very tight and closed and needs time to develop. Yet, with release estimated to only be in June 2020, we decided to go ahead and enter it. We are honoured and thankful to get such amazing recognition for this wine,” says managing director and winemaker Jasper Raats.
The Platter’s South African Wine Guide is considered to be South Africa’s definitive wine guide and the 2020 edition is due to be released in mid-November.
