Although British born, Emily Hobhouse has become an honorary South African through her selfless and courageous actions, one of which exposed the inhumanity of concentration camps during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902).
This unique Chardonnay and Pinot Noir blend is dedicated to her memory and brave women fighting for what is right, all over the world. Made up of predominantly unoaked Chardonnay grapes and blended with a small amount of lightly wooded Pinot Noir grapes from the cooler Elgin region, the wine expresses an alluring salmon pink tint and bursts with aromas of ripe guava, pineapple, kiwi, green apple and a hint of strawberry.
The legacy of Emily Hobhouse, says Jasper Raats, should be remembered for more than just the pivotal role she played in the Anglo-Boer War. While her work during the Anglo-Boer War is well known, exposing and alleviating the suffering of Afrikaans women and children in concentration camps run by British officials, she is also known to foster postwar reconciliation schemes and the documentation of civilians’ wartime stories.
Women, Hobhouse argued, suffers most in war and was therefore one of the largest groups of potential converts to her cause. For her, sharing wartime stories was important if the bonds of solidarity were to be forged and former enemies were to be reconciled. Long after the tragedies of the Anglo-Boer War, Hobhouse again appealed to women to unify during the suffering of the First World War. She said: “On that common ground the opposing nations could meet, and crown their courage, shown in arms, by laying them aside at the call of a higher humanity.”
With this care package we want you to travel back to your heritage in fond remembrance of the strong women who has inspired you to believe that there is no limit in the world to what woman can achieve. In the words of Maya Angelou:
“Your ancestors took the lash, the branding iron, humiliations and oppression because one day they believed you would come along to flesh out the dream.”
Longridge Wine Estate is proud to dedicate this award-winning wine to the memory of Emily Hobhouse.
